Arts
Visual Art (K-5): Two art programs, Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) and Artist in the Classrooms are new to the LeConte curriculum in the 2008/09 school year. The two programs were selected not only to infuse more art instruction in each classroom but also to increase our students’ aesthetic awareness with their ability to reflect on and think critically about visual material.
Visual Thinking Strategies is designed to “allow students to examine art, to think, to contribute observations and ideas, to listen, and to build understandings together.” One of the unique values of this program is that the questioning strategies and the observation skills can be generalized to other learning areas, such as reading comprehension, science, and mathematics.
The Artist in the Classroom is a collaborative program with visual artist, Lucy Ames, who will work with each grade level team to guide teachers to incorporate art projects with other subjects. The artist will be meeting with teachers throughout the year to collaborate and plan lessons to meet the mandated curriculum standards.
