Families of African American Students - LeConte Elementary BUSD

Coalition of Families for Students of African American Descent (CFSAA)

A team of LeConte parents initiated this coalition to increase the involvement and support of African American families within our school community. The overarching goal of this group is to systematically create a foundation that allows students to realize lifelong success throughout their school career and beyond.

The organization is committed to community building, networking, sharing resources to promote positive academic and social growth and foster a generation of children who will instill this same commitment as adults.

Meeting Notes: January Meeting

In addition to discussing the preparations for the African American Heritage Celebration, most of the January meeting was devoted to showing participants mathematics strategies that help students learn basic facts. Principal Wilson explained some mental math concepts, such as counting up, counting back, learning and using doubles, seeing patterns in multiplication, etc. Previously, the group requested information about ways to support their children’s learning so this was one of the first steps to respond to that request. Principal Wilson will offer mathematics workshops for all LeConte families in March and April. The next CFAAS meeting will be March 25, Library, 6:00, to discuss the 2010–2011 school plan and goals for next year specifically related to the achievement of African American students.
